In the late 1950s, a new competitor by the name of Honda began to follow behind Harley-Davidson. When your daring and daring motorcycles start to lose ground to imported compact bikes and scooters, how to fight back?

For Harley-Davidson, the answer was: The Harley-Davidson Topper. Produced for only five years, and with production estimates hovering around four digits, it has the honor of being Harley’s only foray into the scooter world, so far anyway.. With one coming to Mecum Las Vegas 2022 Motorcycle Auction, it can also hold a place in your garage.

Harley-Davidson is the best known for their roaring V-Twin engines, making the Topper a real weird duck in their lineup. It is equipped with a two-stroke single-cylinder mounted flat, developing between five and nine horsepower. Although it is not clear which of the three Topper models is offered here by Mecum, know that none of them will soon set ground speed records.

These few lonely horses reach the ground via an early continuously variable transmission, powering a 20-inch rear wheel. Vintage Motorcycle Reviews mention a starter cord hidden in the chrome dashboard – perfect for those of us who never seem to be able to start properly.

The Topper may not have the performance of MotoGP, but it is an absolutely stunning vehicle when parked. Its combined fiberglass and stamped steel construction gives it an aesthetic immediately identifiable in the early 1960s, yet timeless in its simple beauty. More than a vehicle, it’s a work of art – just art that you can use to get to work.

Mecum’s Las Vegas Motorcycles 2022 auction will begin on January 25, 2022 and run through the 29th of the month. Interested buyers should research the Harley-Davidson Heritage Collection to retrieve this piece of history. You may have to outbid me for this, however.
