Plug-in USB 3.1 Type-C to HDMI 2.0 cable test: Mac easy to monitor

You won’t need a MacBook with an HDMI port if you have Plugable’s USB-C to HDMI cable. Just run the cable between the external display and your Mac or iPad and you get 4K @ 60Hz. Best of all, it’s currently available at a discounted price at under $ 17.

I tested this accessory in my home office to make sure it delivers on what it promises.

Plug-in USB 3.1 Type-C to HDMI 2.0 cable test

People don’t like dongles. This is understandable. And Plugable’s USB-C to HDMI cable takes that into account by integrating an HDMI adapter into a USB-C cable.

Effectively, it’s like having a MacBook with an HDMI port. Without having to shell out at least $ 1,999 for a 2021 MacBook Pro. (The cable also works with iPad Pro and iPad Air models with USB-C.)

Material and design

The USB 3.1 Type-C to HDMI 2.0 plug-in cable is 6 feet long. This is sufficient to connect your Mac to a monitor on your desktop.

The accessory is basically USB-C to HDMI from Plugable adapter but with a much longer cable. And that’s a good thing, because the adapter works quite well.

The cable connects your computer to an external display with a maximum resolution of 4K (3840 × 2160) and a refresh rate of 60Hz. That’s what HDMI 2.0 stands for in its name.

It’s not the latest version of HDMI, but it’s all you need to watch Netflix, Disney +, or Amazon Prime Video in 4K Ultra HD.

To test Plugable’s USB-C to HDMI cable, I used it to connect my iPad Pro to an external monitor and my home TV. It was quick and easy, and I am completely satisfied with the results.

Final thoughts on the pluggable USB 3.1 Type-C to HDMI 2.0 cable

This USB-C to HDMI cable offers the same convenience as having an HDMI port built into your Mac. You won’t find an easier way to connect your MacBook to an HDMI monitor.

While there are alternatives with more capabilities, such as connecting to multiple monitors, these are not as affordable as the Plugable product.

The regular price for the pluggable USB 3.1 Type-C to HDMI 2.0 cable is $ 19.95. Which would be an agreement on its own. But it’s getting better.

Buy the cable from Amazon, and at the time of this writing, you’ll get a $ 3 discount. This reduces your cost to $ 16.95. (Be sure to check the box for the additional discount.)

An almost as simple alternative is Plugable’s USB-C to HDMI adapter ($ 13.95). Just glue it to the end of an HDMI cable and you’re good to go.
